Chromebooks are becoming more and more popular for regular users, mainly because of their extremely attractive price. Why would you pay the extra dollars for a premium laptop, if you don’t need all its extra features? If you’re just like us and you see no reason for that, let me share with you some great news: we have selected the best Chromebooks for watching Netflix and Hulu and we’re sharing our findings with you here.
These Chromebooks will not only be great at streaming your favorite Netflix or Hulu TV shows and movies, but they are also very cheap compared to most laptops out there and they’re also great for surfing the web, chatting with friends, watching YouTube videos and working on all your documents. A perfect choice if you don’t need more!
We’ve already shared with you a list of great cheap Chromebooks under $200, but now it’s time to focus exclusively on live streaming videos, so let’s check out below the best Chromebooks for watching Hulu and/or Netflix in 2017. And yes, they all have an HDMI cable port so that you can connect your new Chromebook to your TV and stream all the shows you otherwise can’t.
(Note that we’re listing the laptops based on the display size, from the small 11.1″ Samsung to the large 15.6-Inch model from Acer)
Samsung Chromebook 3
Samsung’s Chromebooks have always been some of the most appreciated on the market, and they are so for all the right reasons: they offer great performance at a cheap price, and that is exactly what we need in our lives!
The Chromebook 3 is a really small one – a 11.6″ display – so unless you really need something extremely small and portable (as well as really cheap), you might want to go for bigger models. But if the size doesn’t matter for you, then this one would be great for playing your favorite TV shows and movies. Plus, it has an HDMI port so you can easily connect it to your HD TV and stream on the larger screen. It’s actually a good thing to do as many shows and movies are not available on Smart TVs, but are available online.
In terms of performance, if you don’t need the specifics, it’s enough to know that the Samsung Chromebook 3 can handle streaming without a problem and can do so for long periods of time on one charge. If you want to know the specifics, we can note that it runs on an Intel Celeron N3050 processor running at 2.16GHz with 4GB of RAM. It has a maximum resolution of 1366×768 pixels – so you can only go for HD and not full HD resolutions, but the truth is that for streaming movies and TV shows online, especially on its small screen, you won’t really notice a difference.
As a bonus, the Chromebook 3 weighs only 2.54 pounds and measures 0.7 inches thick so it is extremely portable and easy to carry around. However, this can turn into a Con for other people who would probably appreciate a larger screen. It’s also worth noting that, just like in the case of most Chromebooks out there, you get very limited storage: Samsung’s Chromebook 3 offers just 16GB of storage, but on the better side, we’re talking about a SSD which is really, really fast. However, since you won’t need to store the movies and TV shows when you’re streaming, this shouldn’t be a big problem.
ASUS Chromebook C301SA-DB04
We’re now moving to what I would call a decent size for watching movies and shows directly on the laptop’s screen. In this case, the size remains relatively small so that we have increased portability, but at 13.3″ you’re getting a larger and better screen.
This model is actually extremely good in terms of performance: it is powered by a Quad-Core processor, the Intel Celeron N3160 which can be Turbo Boosted up to 2.24 GHz. One of the best features of this model, though, is that it supports full HD resolution (1920*1080 pixels), which comes in handy when streaming your favorite content online. You can also connect this one to a larger TV thanks to its HDMI port.
This ASUS-made Chromebook is also the one offering the most storage space on our list, at 64GB. Its storage is provided by an eMMC drive, which is slower than an SSD card, but still good for a Chromebook. So if you’re also looking for a bit more storage (maybe for saving a few shows and/or movies for watching offline), this one offers the most.
All in all, I am really satisfied with this Chromebook and it is definitely one of my favorites on the list, mostly because of its full HD resolution and extra storage. The image quality is really good and this laptop remains highly portable since it’s ultra slim and extremely light at around 3 pounds.
Another 13.3″ option comes from Acer. Acer is my go-to brand when it comes to laptops and this means that they are also able to manufacture great Chromebooks as well. This one is perfect for streaming Netflix and Hulu videos and comes with a great price/quality ratio.
It is an extremely powerful device, powered by the NVIDIA Tegra K1 Quad Core processor running at 2.1 GHz. This is actually a really solid processor and probably one of the most underrated ones on the market so I’m actually really happy to see this model using it. You only get 2GB of RAM here, but that should still be enough for a flawless experience without any lag or freezes – as long as you have a good internet connection.
The Chromebook13 also supports full HD resolution, which is always a bonus, especially if you plan on connecting it via an HDMI cable to your TV. But even if you watch on your laptop’s display, you will still enjoy a crisp, solid image.
This model offer 16GB of storage on an SSD and I consider it a really good Chromebook with a long battery life and a great processor/GPU combo. More storage and more RAM would’ve been welcome, but even as it is it works great for streaming online.
We’re now moving to an even larger screen with an elegant model manufactured by HP. We’re talking about a 14-Inch Chromebook, also powered by the NVIDIA Tegra K1 Quad Core processor. And, just like the model above, this one also comes with just 2GB of RAM. It also offers 16GB of storage space on its SSD. Not a reason to jump up with joy, but this can be considered normal storage for Chromebooks, which are made for online usage mostly.
Even though the screen is larger at 14-inch, it is not a full HD model (goes up to 1366 x 768 pixels). I must say again that this is not a very big problem when streaming content on this laptop or even when connecting it to a large TV via an HDMI cable, as HD resolution is really good for the eye.
So if you’re looking for a larger screen – all while still being as portable as possible (this model not only looks good, but is also really thin at 0.7-inches and light at around 3.4 pounds) – this is the best model we found under the 14″ category.
Acer Chromebook 15
The Acer Chromebook 15 offers a display size that I would consider standard for regular laptops and great for watching video content: 15″. So based on this – as well as its other specifications – this Chromebook is my favorite on this list and therefore my favorite when it comes to streaming online TV shows or movies from Hulu and Netflix.
One of its strongest points is the really good processor: it runs on an Intel Core i3-5005U, which is really, really good for Chromebooks and there are actually not many using such a powerful processor. It also offers 4GB of RAM and a bit more storage storage than most models on the list with a 32 SSD. I know it’s not the 64GB offered by the ASUS model recommended above, but it’s an extremely fast storage drive and sometimes that’s all that matters.
There’s also another great thing about it: it supports full HD resolution, meaning that your favorite shows will look great on its large screen. Of course, you can still connect it via an HDMI cable to a larger TV if you want to.
All in all, this is my favorite product on the list. I prefer a larger screen at all times and this one offers that without becoming too uncomfortable to carry around. It’s true – this is the heaviest product on our list, but at 3.85 pounds, it’s not too much. You get great specs, a large screen, decent storage… this is a winner in my books so definitely choose this one unless you particularly want one with a smaller screen.
So these would be the best Chromebooks for streaming videos from Netflix and Hulu. We’ve listed our top pick for each size, with two options for the 13″ models. You have all the details you need to make an educated choice and get the right Chromebook for your needs and preferences.
But no matter which model you buy, I am sure that you will be extremely pleased with the streaming quality and overall quality of these Chromebooks. Don’t forget though that a solid internet connection is essential, otherwise you won’t be able to get the most from streaming your favorite shows even if you buy a more powerful traditional laptop.
