A 14″ laptop is the perfect choice if you want extended portability, but also a screen that’s large enough to easily see what’s happening on it. Another bonus is that price-wise, you can get a better deal for a 14-inch laptop than a larger one.

I personally believe that any laptop under 14-inch is small and even though I prefer the larger ones for work and gaming, I can understand and appreciate the higher portability of a 14-inch model. These are the best 14 inch laptops of 2020, all under $1,000 at the moment of writing this article (have in mind that, even though highly unlikely, prices could change so double check the prices yourself). Great products, especially if you can go to the top limit of your budget!
CHUWI LapBook Pro
If you’re on a very limited budget, your best bet is to exchange brand with performance. And this lesser known brand offers the best performance we could find for such a low price.
It is powered by a quad-core processor, the Intel Gemini-Lake N4100 which goes up to 2.4GHz. This is a decent processor, but not more. However, for the price of this laptop, it’s amazing!
Even more amazing is the fact that you’re also getting 8GB of RAM for the money, as well as a solid 256GB of SSD storage.
There are even more goodies available – the benefits of going for lesser known brands! While these are not vital, they are useful to have: like a backlit keyboard, a USB Type-C port (as well as a regular USB 3 one), a HDMI port and a nice, 90% screen-to-body ratio.
What is really good though is the laptop’s resolution: it offers a full HD resolution for the price (1920×1080 pixels) and a really solid image quality, overall. It’s all rounded up by a good battery that offers between 6-8 hours on a single charge.
While not the most amazing laptop you can ever get, have in mind that you are paying for it just a fraction of a regular laptop’s price. It’s not perfect and it’s far from the best – especially with some users complaining about its cooling system – but for its price, we couldn’t find anything better.
We’re moving to better known brands now, with a product that’s similar in terms of performance, but which offers a bit more storage, which is always welcome.
A note to have in mind: From now on, I consider all the recommended models great choices, with them getting better and better as the price increases. So always consider purchasing the one that gets as close to your maximum budget as possible.
Back to the VivoBook, it is powered by a dual-core processor, the AMD A6-9225 which goes up to 3 GHz when turbo boosted. It has 8GB of RAM and 500GB of Storage.
The downside here is important: we’re talking about a HDD and not a SSD, so expect it to be much slower in terms of reading/writing speeds when compared to SSD models. But there’s a lot of storage for what can still be considered a really low price.
It is extremely slim and light: at 0.7″ thick and 3.8 lbs, it is highly portable. It comes with Windows 10 Home installed and has a ton of ports – including USB Type C and HDMI.
As a downside, the 14″ display only offers HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels) which is really a bummer. But at least on the small display, you won’t really feel the difference. It would’ve still been a lot better with full-HD, but at this price we can’t be too picky.
I also like the fact that it has a great design – it looks good, it feels good and you will have no problem using it. Its fan does get loud when trying to cool it down – so know that you’re not getting the most silent laptop ever. But for the money, it is really good!
2020 HP 14″ – Editor’s Choice
A generic name doesn’t mean poor performance, on the contrary! You get the best balance from it – a decent price that’s around the mid-range of our budget, but also good performance.
It is actually so good that it got our Editor’s Choice award, beating the more expensive models below thanks to its unbelievable price.
This model is powered by a more recent (and very solid) 10th Generation Intel Core i5-1035G4 that goes up to 3.7GHz. Even more, it has a whooping 12GB of RAM, which is pure gold at this price.
It also comes with a SSD so you always get maximum speed, but at lower capacity – just 128GB. While this is definitely not a lot, we believe that it’s a price you can pay for all the other goodies it offers. Plus, you can always invest at a later date, if needed, in extra storage – like an external SSD.
It has various ports, including an USB Type C and HDMI. They are all (but for the card reader) on the right side. I prefer them on both sides, but that’s really not a deal breaker.
The 14″ display offers full HD resolution (1920 x 1080) and the image quality is perfect for this price range. Particularly good are the speakers for this model and even though they won’t match the quality of a dedicated system, they still deliver surprisingly good sound quality.
It is also thin (.71 inches) and light (3.3 lbs) and has a good battery too – one that can deliver up to 10 hours on a single charge. All in all, an amazing find that is currenly selling for well over our maximum budget of $1,000.
Acer Swift 5
If you’re looking for huge portability, you found it with this model. It is the lightest on our list, at just 2.14 lbs. It’s also ultra thing and with a really good design. It simply can’t get slimmer that this – it’s almost the size of an USB port.
But the portability is not its only advantage. It is a really good laptop overall, with an 8th generation Intel Core i5-8250U Processor (going up to 3.4 GHz) and 8GB of RAM. It also has a 256GB SSD for super-fast storage.
This 14″ model offers full HD resolution (1920×1080) and a touchscreen if you prefer those. It also has a fingerprint reader for added security, as well as a backlit keyboard.
This isn’t the best screen for outdoor usage – especially in bright light, but the laptop overall is still great. Add to that up to 8 hours of usage on a single charge and you have enough reasons to invest your money in this product.
Lenovo Flex 14
If you are ready to go close to the top of today’s budget, we have a real treat for you. This laptop is extremely powerful and has a lot of goodies to make your jaw drop. You might not need all the extra bells and whistles, but read on and decide if you do or don’t.
Probably the key thing about the Lenovo Flex is that we’re talking about a 2-in-1 product. In other words, you can turn it into a tablet by simply flipping over the display. This means that it also has touchscreen and support for the Lenovo Pen.
Even if you don’t plan to use it as a tablet (which would be, truth be told, bulky), the Lenovo Flex is great for a 14″ laptop. It has the power of a 10th generation Intel Core i7-10510u processor as well as 16GB RAM.
It also offers the best storage on our list so far, with a 512GB SSD. In other words, this laptop is blazing fast and surprising.
The touchscreen supports full HD resolution and delivers a really good image quality overall. You get lots of ports, including USB type-C and they are spread on both sides of the laptop for offering more options.
The battery is good as well – up to 8 hours on a single use, which is really good for our budget.
I really like this product which is indeed better than the HP one that got our editor’s choice award. The main reason why it got the award is the price difference, with the Flex being much more expensive. But if you have the budget for it, it is definitely the much better choice as it is faster, offers more storage and is overall better.
These are our recommended 14″ laptops that sell for less than $1,000 right now. We did our best to cover all the price ranges as you saw for yourself and we are sure that, no matter what your budget is, you will find a great laptop that you will love based on our recommendations.
