With the understandable rise in popularity of the SSD drives, traditional Hard Drives are no longer on top of the priorities list of manufacturers worldwide. However, when it comes to backup and being able to carry around large volumes of data, a traditional external hard drive is the better choice, especially for those looking to keep some money in their pockets.

It’s true, the portable HDDs are not as fast ad the best portable SSDs out there, but if you need humongous amounts of storage space, a hard drive is still the better option in my opinion. And in order to make things easier for you when it comes to choosing the best product, we have a list of the best external / portable 4TB HDDs in 2017.

We went for a huge capacity because that’s exactly what we sometimes need and we were surprised with the relatively low number of external HDDs available at the moment. However, since you only need one and there are still so many to choose from, we’ve decided to narrow down the list and share with you the best of the best and make it easier for you to choose your favorite one – mostly based on the budget you have.

So without further ado, here are the best portable 4TB hard drives for 2017 (listed from the cheapest to the most expensive at the moment of writing this article):

Seagate Backup Plus External Hard Drive

Most of the HDDs I’ve bought over the years for myself, family or friends were Seagate or Western Digital and I never had any reasons for complaint. And even though Seagate Backup Plus is the cheapest 4TB external hard drive on our list, it doesn’t mean it’s not really good.

It connects via USB 3.0 to PC and Mac and also offers a really useful Seagate Dashboard software which allows you to easily back-up your movies, music and photos with its help. I prefer to do it on my own though, but the software is perfect for the less tech-savvy.

Although we had no problems with this portable HDD when testing it, we saw that many people complained about it stopping working after a few months of usage. Many of these reviews and complaints are old, though, so Seagate has probably fixed any problems their hard drives had. But do keep this in mind and maybe look at another option if you want to be 100% safe. But I repeat: we don’t think you’ll have any problems with this hard drive, otherwise we wouldn’t recommend it!

WD My Book Desktop External Hard Drive

A truly impressive solution for data storage and backing up your files, the My Book HDD from Western Digital comes at a fair price and offers a lot of goodies too. You can connect it to your computer via an USB 3.0 cable and you can also get the WD Backup software Acronis True Image WD Edition system level backup options to automate the back-up process and make it as easy as possible.

It’s difficult to find information regarding the actual RPM of the drive – just as it is the case of the Seagate one above, so we’re assuming that it’s 5,400 RPM instead of 7,200, but even so for data storage, it’s great!

Durable, reliable and of a decent size for the amount of storage it offers, the WD My Book 4TB is a great option if you’re looking for value for your money. I would personally choose this one of all on the list simply because it has the better ratings (based on the number of reviews) and WD hard drives are traditionally high quality.

Fantom GF3B4000UP

Although a bit larger than other models on our list, this external & portable HDD offers 7,200 storage which is better in all cases because of the extra writing and reading speed you get. It still sells at a decent price, works with PCs as well as Macs and is easy to connect via an USB 3.0 cable.

I know that we’re not talking about a brand that’s as famous as the others on our list, but as long as the product is well made and it does the job – and the GF3B4000UP really does a great job at providing a lot of storage that you can carry around with you – then it’s on the list! So if you’re especially looking for a slightly faster option, then this external HDD is the perfect choice for you!

HGST Touro Desk Pro

The most expensive option on our list comes with some really nice features: the Touro Desk Pro has a sleek stackable design in case you need to add more to your desk. It also offers cloud backup and remote access with cloud backup, meaning that the data that you have on your hard drive is safe even in case of a hardware failure.

It also seems to be a 7,200 RPM HDD, which means that you get better writing and reading speeds than those of the first two recommended products. Overall, a high quality product with a really cool design and a lot of storage space.

It is true that these external HDDs are bulkier and slower than the more modern Solid State Drives, but if you think about the fact that you get two times, three times or even 4 times more storage from external HDDs than from external SSDs for half the price of the later, you start to appreciate them for their real value. Since you will only use these for storage and backup and not running an operating system or other programs, they are surely the better option today.

So pick your favorite on our list and make it yours today. You will not regret it!
