PS4 Fan too Loud and Overheating? Here Is How to Fix It

Every gamer knows the curse of an overheating console. When your PS4 becomes excessively loud, it can disrupt your gaming experience. Fortunately, the reasons why it overheats are often identifiable, and fixes no longer require sending your console to the shop.

In this guide, you’ll learn the common culprits for PS4 fans overheating and how to troubleshoot at home.

Why is My PS4 Overheating?

When your PS4 overheats, you’ll typically see this message on your screen:

There are several reasons a PS4 might overheat, including:

  • Vent blockage
  • Lack of clearance between vents and other objects
  • Dust accumulation
  • Defective fan
  • Temperature causing faulty hardware

How to Troubleshoot a Loud PS4 Fan

If your PS4 is overheating, here are a few troubleshooting tips you can try.

1. Shut Down Your Console

If you’re lucky, a simple shutdown should do the trick. Allow your PS4 to cool down to a normal temperature before restarting it. If it doesn’t overheat, you can continue using it.

2. Keep Your Console in a Ventilated Area

Consoles need ample space to push hot air away. It will likely overheat if your console is in a small, cramped area.

Consider placing your console on a riser to encourage airflow and avoid keeping it close to walls or other electronic devices.

3. Use Compressed Air to Clean Dust

Un-stuff your console’s vents using canned air or an electric duster. You can also try a low-powered handheld vacuum.

Sometimes, you may need to dismantle your PS4 to eradicate the dust. However, if your console is still under warranty, you’re best off contacting Sony in case they can repair or replace it at no cost.

If your warranty has expired, use these steps to dismantle your PS4 for cleaning:

  1. Flip your console upside down and remove the stickers covering the screws to unscrew them.
  2. Carefully remove the bottom half of your PS4, gently wiping away dirt with a clean microfiber towel.
  3. Use compressed air to dust out the fan. Use a cotton swab to clean smaller components.

4. Place Your Console in a Vertical Position

Placing your PS4 upright can encourage airflow and help your console cool down.

5. Turn Off Boost Mode

While Boost Mode improves gameplay by increasing frame rates, it can force your console to work harder.

If your PS4 continues overheating after troubleshooting, you may have a hardware problem requiring a specialist.
