How to Fix “Failure Configuring updates. Reverting Changes” Problem in Windows

Despite new iterations of Windows operating systems, Windows 7 remains popular with many users. However, Windows 7 loyalists have been frequently encountering the following error message:

Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer.

While error messages are no fun, the “reverting changes” error typically sorts itself out, albeit over a long time (roughly 20 to 30 minutes). In case it doesn’t, there are some fixes to the “reverting changes” issue you can try.

What Causes this Windows Error?

The Windows 7 error typically occurs due to:

  • Incompatible third-party software
  • Incorrectly disconnecting USB devices
  • Incomplete file transfers
  • A virus
  • Other system errors

How to Correct the Configuring Error

Before attempting to correct the error, note that Windows 7 typically resolves the configuration itself. In some cases, it can take longer than 20 to 30 minutes, so you’ll want to keep your laptop plugged into a power source.

Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case, and the error may reappear even after a five-hour update. So, what can you do? Try these steps:

  1. Reboot your laptop or computer, ignoring the warning message on the screen. Open Windows Installer via DVD or flash drive and run the Repair Tool.
  2. Reboot your laptop or computer again, removing the DVD or flash drive. Tap the F8 key while your device reboots to launch Safe Mode.
  3. Initiate a System Restore, using the most recent file during which your system was running with no issues. If you’re an OEM user, consider a system update. This should work successfully, though may remove recent files and undo recent settings.
  4. Run an antivirus scan and malware removal tool to eliminate a virus as the root cause of the system error.

There you have it—the configuration error resolved. While this fix is often foolproof, there may be instances in which you’ll have to get your device serviced. If you have additional tips for this particular error, let us know in the comments.
