How to Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity on a Laptop?

How to Adjust Touchpad Sensitivity on a Laptop?

Most modern laptops have flawless touchpads that work exactly as we want them to out of the box. But what about those that don’t? We’ll talk about them in today’s article where we’ll share how to adjust a Touchpad’s sensitivity in Windows.

The good news is that it’s extremely easy to make your touchpad more responsive and customize it in any way you want, until you get a perfect experience out of it.

This works best if your touchpad is not responsive (or too responsive) or if you are unhappy with the cursor’s movement speed when using the touchpad.

A laptop’s touchpad is a built-in mouse with additional features. Its main role is that of allowing you to move the cursor on the screen and clicking it by simply moving your fingers over the touchpad itself.

But it can be further customized with various gestures and swipes in order to offer you shortcuts and improve your experience while using your laptop.

How to customize your touchapd on a Windows laptop?

You will have to go through some Windows settings and adjust them as needed – but we’re here to guide you through the process. Here is what you have to do, step by step:

1. In the Windows Search bar, type “Touchpad settings” and select the top result:

2. In the new Windows, you have various sliders to adjust. First, click the “Touchpad sensitivity” button and try increasing the setting to “High” or “Most sensitive” and see what works best for you:

3. To further customize the sensitivity and mouse cursor speed, once you are happy with the touchpad sensitivity setting, you should also adjust the “Change Cursor Speed” option:

This, in combination with the sensitivity option will help you get the exact response from the touchpad when using it. Experiment with various settings to find the right one for you.

4. If you want to customize your touchpad even further, this is where you can change gestures and other settings.

5. If anything goes wrong and you managed to somehow break some settings, simply scroll down to the bottom and select “Reset your touchpad”.

This will reset all settings and gestures to default values so you can start over with the customizations.

And this is it! You have now adjusted your touchpad’s settings and you know how to fully control its sensitivity and all other features in the future.

What to do if you are still not satisfied with the touchpad?

In case your laptop’s touchpad is damaged and malfunctioning or if you still don’t manage to adjust the sensitivity and cursor speed to fit your needs, you have a few options which require the purchase of additional peripherals.

The best and easiest method to get rid of touchpad related problems when changing the settings just won’t do it is to purchase a regular computer mouse.

We recommend getting a traditional USB mouse like this one (affiliate link) as wireless mice tend to cause various sorts of trouble and are less responsive than wired ones.

Using a mouse is generally the best option for laptop users, even though it gives you an additional component to carry around. But they’re small and very light. However, the if you want to use gestures, mice won’t allow that.

So your second option is to purchase an external touchpad for your laptop. This will also be plugged in via an USB cable and will act like a regular touchpad.

Your best choice here would be to get a precision touchpad which supports a variety of touch gestures and has various shortcuts to optimize your work.

Our recommended precision touchpad is the Keymecher model (affiliate link).

But in almost all cases, simply going through your laptop’s touchpad settings and adjusting the sensitivity as instructed above will solve all problems.
